The main research focus of the lab is to characterize how drugs and diseases affect the blood brain barrier, and in particular, how these changes affect the penetration of therapeutic medications into the brain. We use both in vitro and in vivo models in our investigations.
The lab currently has two main therapeutic areas of interest:

  • We investigate the effects of HIV and drug abuse on the integrity and function of the blood brain barrier. Additionally, we study how these insults to the blood brain barrier alter the antiretroviral penetration (drugs used in the treatment of HIV) into the brain.
  • We investigate how long-term sedative/hypnotic use may affect the blood brain barrier and potentially alter the transport of amyloid-beta.
